We took our infant daughter there and it was fine
That's exactly right--woodcock. The story behind the name is that back before La Becasse was a French restaurant, it was Woodcock's Family Restaurant. When the O'Neill's bought the restaurant and converted it to a French restaurant, they kept the family name, Woodcock, translated into French. It has now been La Becasse going on 40 years.
This is an exquisitely curated fine dining experience.
Overrated and overpriced. I've grilled more flavorful lamb chops at home. If you want to charge top dollar, by all means but serve food that lives up to it.
We both ordered the Duck Duo. It was perfectly seasoned, prepared and presented. A very authentic french country experience in northern Michigan.
If you have a family, do not come to this restaurant. They are completely intolerant of children. They put on airs, but in reality they are not that fantastic. In a major urban market, they wouldn't survive.
Excellent food and service
Great Food & service
Took the family here for birthday gathering and it was a great experience. The staff was very attentive and the owner was very accommodating. Everyone at the table enjoyed their dishes, which can be tough to win everyone over, so that was an accomplishment. They had a nice selection of wines and drinks. They served a birthday cake that was WONDERFUL, and was an excellent finale to the meal. If we are in that area again we will be sure to make reservations again. Well done.
I was excited to try this place but was a bit disappointed, it’s not worth the hype. If you want 80’s French style cuisine then this is the place. There was a good 45 min wait between appetizer and main. The escargot didn’t really have enough garlic and was kind of rubbery, the duck confit was dried out and bland. Otherwise the food was basic and solid for traditional fare. The waiter barely checked on us. The issue is it tries to style itself as fine dining, but in reality the food is dated and more suited to an old casual French style bistro. Pricing wise it was really not worth it, I have had much higher quality food that had more depth at other French restaurants.
It was my first visit. My Birthday dinner. It was delicious, the service outstanding. Ive heard good reports, they were correct. I will return. A wonderful spot for a date. 🌷😊
Special place - My parents have an anniversary dinner here every year.
This is a cozy country French restaurant in the heart of beautiful Leelanau County, Michigan. The dining room is simple but elegant and the food, attention, and wines are outstanding. Ask Chef Guillaume about excellent wine values or a really special wine for the occasion.
Quaint, lovely hidden gem!! Food and service were perfect!! Delicious tender meats! Everything was perfect, except for the MILLIONS of tiny gnats flying around. Drove us crazy!! Otherwise, an exceptional experience!!
Went to La Becasse on a random winter Wednesday because it's winter and they were open. Other than the use of English, everything would make you think you were actually in France - the smells, the look, and, most importantly, the food. The wine list was sufficiently long and had plenty of options to suit anyone's desires and was reasonably priced. The chef (who is French) came around to the tables and personally thanked us for the visit. This level of personal touch is always welcome. Don't let its location from TC distract you, La Becasse is worth it.
We stopped in for dessert only and it was wonderful.
Love the wine list. Service is superb. We miss the salmon and Peachy!
La Becasse is a treasure, and worth every mile slightly off the beaten path. It's one of my favorites *anywhere*. Chef Guillaume's French training and Carribean flair make his cuisine both simple and completely delicious, and reasonably priced to boot. The local ingredients are superb. His staff, devoted to the restaurant, makes your experience pleasant at every turn. And then there's the wine list, which defies description - a festival of wonderful bottles from around the world, but of course especially France, where Chef Guillaume's lifetime of friendships give him access to wines found nowhere else in America. If you love food and wine, but can dispense with paying for needless glamour, you will love La Becasse. And, like me, you will return. Often.
The restaurant is a little crowded in that one has to bend around chairs to get to your table. That being said we had a great dinner. We started with sauteed fern fronds with oyster mushrooms in a morel.cream sauce. This was exceptional. My wife had a succulent duck confirm and seared duck breast. This was served with a warm sweet potato cake. I had New Zealand rack of lamb.which was very good and flavorful. It was accompaniedby Spring vegitables and mashed potatoes. For dessert we had Blueberry Lemon Parfait.
First time here everything was amazing (food, service & atmosphere)! Will definitely be back!
Terrific dinner!
Food is amazing. Appitizers and wine list are brilliant.
Delicious
This restaurant was fantastic. The food was excellent. Service was great -- our server was knowledgeable, friendly, knew the menu inside and out, and was very helpful. The atmosphere was also nice. Their wine list was impressive, and the pace of the food was great too. There was plenty of time between courses to talk, enjoy wine, etc. Excellent experience and I will definitely be going back!
Superb cuisine! Wine listing is endless.
I rarely write a review but felt this was an important moment in a foodie world... my husband ordered the lamb medallions, the portions were three half dollar size pieces with 6 oz.. of whipped potatoes and 3 pieces of a vegetable. The small meat portion made up the main part of the meal but sadly his portion was 1/3 fat. We mentioned it to our waitress who dismissed us by saying this was common in their lamb dishes. I feel the quality is there for a higher priced restaurant but it still lacks polished service or adequate portions. I'm sorry but the price of our meal was not reflected fairly in the overall experience.
Our food was amazing. Bill is an outstanding person. Who made our dining experience something to look forward to again.
Wonderful authentic french cuisine! Great service. The food is not overly complicated, just extremely well prepared.
Wonderful food and the service is just top not. The French onion soup was great as well as the white fish.
This is as good as it gets. Food was excellent, Michelle provided perfect service, wine selections are very good, can't wait to return.
This place is a must do. Five star experience in every way. Our party of six tasted all but two of the menu items and NOTHING was average. Chef you are doing amazing work and please open a similar experience in Chicago soon. All the best and we will be back! Joe
Awesome ðŸ‘
I've been coming to this restaurant for about twenty years and I have never had anything less than spectacular here. From appetizer to dessert, the options are wide ranging and delicious. The accompanying wine list is vast, and the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. It's a small kitchen, and amazing how much good food they produce on a nightly basis.
Amazing dinner!! Beautiful, quaint country setting.
Who knew you'd be able to find quaint, classic and unbelievably crafted french cuisine in a small restaurant on the side of the road off of Glen Lake? We took our teens children (who are very open to trying new things) and they loved their meals. Not a place where there'd be many kids esp at that price point, but it wasn't odd and the staff were wonderful! Escargot and tomato tart appetizers were tasty. All entrees were perfection. Desserts were interesting, esp the chocolate cake in phyllo. Overall, a fantastic experience. Food speaks for itself!
This country french food is always excellent as is the service. I had on of dinners of a life time there. That is not the norm but there always the.
Food and service was perfect!
Most amazing meal I have had in a long time!
They food is amazing and presented beautifully. The wine list is extensive. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and professional.
A dumpy little place that was swarmed with fruit flies. Overpriced and common french cuisine. And the salad was a lettuce leaf. The only reason for 3 stars is that the service was very good.
A must visit place, great French Cuisine, only topped by outstanding service that is friendly and knowledgeable. Love it! Ask for Bill
Off the beaten path. Amazing food prepared by an amazing chef. One of the best wine selections in the area. If you don’t want to make the venture out onto Leelanau Peninsula you can try his other restaurant in Traverse City, Bistro Fou Fou.
Always excellent. Not overly formal, world class cuisine.
Oct. 3, 2014We drove an hour to get here. It was 100% worth the drive. It was my birthday so high expectations that were unequivocally met. We had the Tomato goat cheese tart which was melt - in - the - mouth delicious. My husband had the Duck Duo & I had the Pan-American Veal Noisettes--we were both smitten with our choices. Btw. The vegetarian choice looked awesome too! They list the local suppliers on the back of the menu. We have eaten all over the world & this was just superb. Wine list excellent. Wait staff professionsl, timely & very knowledgeable. Pricing was appropriate for fine dining.
The best restaurant in the area in my opinion. The building is small and quaint, and feels like home. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The menu is small, but hyper focused on providing delicious and authentic meals. The lamb is the stand out for me, and after having it several times, I can strongly recommend it regardless of how it is prepared. The duck is also fantastic. Make sure you call ahead and get a reservation, as it fills up quickly.
Always very good. La Becasse set the standard for fine dining in Northern Michiga almost 40 years ago and has waivered from that high standard. Don't be put off by my characterization of La Becasse as setting the standard for fine dining, the good snd the service are as good as any high quality French resaurant in any major urban area, The atmosphere is appropriately relaxed to enhance your time on the Leelanau Peninsula. As to food, excellent pâtés, duck and veal dishes. Nice deserts. Good wine list and drinks.
My husband and I had our wedding dinner at La Becasse this May. It could not have been more perfect! The intimate setting, outstanding service, and excellent food made the evening so enjoyable and memorable. Our guests loved the cocktails and dinner options (but loved the desserts even more!) I am so thankful to the Chef and the staff, especially Vickie, who helped us coordinate our dinner plans leading up to our wedding night, and provided incredible service during our dinner. La Becasse is an absolutely wonderful place, and any time I visit this area in Northern Michigan I will most certainly always come back. Thank you!!-Sierra and Nick, Chicago
Loved it. Sat outside on a nice evening had some wonderful escargo & wine. Nice wine and alcohol selection. We will be back!
Excellent service and escargot.
We held our rehearsal dinner here for our wedding in the fall of 2013. The food and service were amazing for a party of 20+. I highly recommend this restaurant, and will be going back often for special occasions and great food. A true gem in the area.
A gem. Small venue with rotating menue complimented local farm and vine to table. We worth the drive. It is a destination.
Went on a half price deal. Food delicious but would not go otherwise. Too expensive.
